1850

Do review these stills from a tremendously important estate sale held in Memphis over the weekend. It is a treat to glimpse this home, which sits cloaked behind a high fence and a large swathe of property diagonal to our University Club in our Central Gardens, where there is nary a tall building to peep it from. In general though, I find such events to be confusing and tragic. I know a handful of these living descendants, and I understand that their lives have run a separate course--their comforts are not in the old profusions (Lord knows why). People do not live in state anymore, do not want to employ staffs, pay fat tariffs. This (among other things...) is why so many of the fine old American houses have been demolished or turned museum. I can't lay claim to this sort of thing. My ancestors were poor and feckless, but what objects of theirs I do have, I hold fast to. And I imagine, if I possessed in my line a WHOLE house full of things purchased and arranged just so by my people, I would bar it from being disbanded as best I could (I know...money, means, etc.). If I remember correctly (and do correct me), Pillow's family seat was burned down before her mother was born. But if Pillow and Mama Pillow could, I think they would have it still. I'm being unjustly critical (with little grounding in reality, sums and figures). But I know, having grown up in Central Gardens, that properties like these see uncertain and unhappy fates once let loose. If there are potential buyers, they'll surely bristle at the price. It will sit empty for a stretch. It will maybe be bought and sold, bought and sold by those who hardly live in it, certainly not for generation after generation, as before. It lies right on the train track border between ours and a far dodgier section of town. The address is a bit tarnished now, the pocket of land isolating, and in dicey Memphis, worrisome. And so it goes; America is too fast for History.

Whatever happens, the kitchen will be lost. Ooooof.

"Miles Above"
Anne Waldman
1985

To be silent was a thought concerning you
who are spending long periods of time
hermetically sealed
You know, I just arrived the spine a burning
question: is sex securely fastened?

The stewardess has poisoned me out of jealousy
She knows your naked trunk is curvaceous
"But relax, have another"

I've resolved recalcitrantly on suing
your impresario
He's strewn with too many engagements
& bookkeepers now, his memory's running away

I'm running away to die in Reno
Think of me whose shaking hand wrote
these lines light years above your heart

Cosa Importante Para Tuesday

I was wasting away, googling 'cholas' yesterday, when I found this page. La chica is clearly GLAMOROUS (I love a uniform). And guns! It's incredible what kinds of criminal information people post up on the Internet. Image aside, perhaps the choicest discovery is the handy Spanglish of the first two comments...A&P could learn a thing or two—toda HOOD.

Oh Boy Oberto

I'm not a fan de etsy.com. It propagates an estilo that is twee and bad bad (to me). And a friend once showed me all of these wretched prints she'd bought on the site for to cover her new walls and honestly it sort of bothered me that she hadn't chosen some photographs of mine instead (she really could have had them for free and I know she would have liked them better because she did seem rather doubtful of the weird stuff that she'd gathered online). And maybe she could have made her own wall-hangings. She's creative and resourceful and took some painting classes in college. I'm being a snob. Hand-made things are beautiful, marketing such wares not easy, the Internet a fine solution. And I might find a decent knit hat here and there (if I could manage to wade through all of the damn ye-olde-gifte-shoppe hair accessories). Honestly, the worst of it is that shopping online is such a drag.

Anyway, the notion of a site, regretsy.com, dedicated to lampooning the most earnestlyawful stuff one finds on etsy is clever and apropos. But they get it wrong too! Methinks these folk like the tweecraft, because they spend a lot of lazy energy deriding Twilight memorabilia and sculptures made by the mentally ill and/or spiritually attuned latterlifelesbians--essentially, the only good stuff one is bound to find on etsy. Comme ça:

note: Pillow and Pet, should we buy any of these for el castillo? The Gosselin? The glove?

Fell in love with a junkie on the train this morning. He looked like my ex-boy and had blood on his shirt, dirty sneakers and a limp. It must be the weather. It must be my reproductive system. Una mezcla.

"Successful"
Drake, feat. Lil' Wayne and Trey Songz

Pillow played this track for me a few weeks ago. I downloaded it and proceeded to study it (in all of its heavy hotness) on my iPod, on the train and the street. Drake, as most of y'all been knowing, is Jimmy, wheelchair-bound Degrassi heartthrob, one of a team of wholesome and compelling Canadian daytime television teens (cult-status beloved Stateside). He rhymed occasionally on the show. But, for many this year, it came as a surprise that he was recording an album under Lil' Wayne's aegis, clurrrb "canoodling" with Rihanna, generally being a rapstar. His summer single "Best I Ever Had" was big, especially with Young World, but I was unconvinced. I found it irritating and puerile. This guy, "Successful," on the other hand, has soul and weight (an aforementioned "heavy hotness"), lyrical punch--"My girl love me but fuck it my heart beat slow." The first bars are dungeon-ous, casting one into hazy depths, a backward, basement church. Trey's refrain is apathetic to the max, slow and careless, a supposition, an expression of vague desire for a vague property. Half Memphian, half Great Northern Jew (bestill my heart), Drake's stories are lingually street (I mean, spoken in the manner of most hip hop), but the meat of them and his point of view are pretty privileged, at ease. He is not a "striver" or even a pretend "striver." He doesn't want to fail; he wants recognition, "success," but he needs for nothing. He has swagger, but he has indecision also, a kind of waffle-y quality that is more the rakish, gambling-indebted "profligate son" of Anthony Trollope novels than gangsta'. He was never in a gang (outside of the Screen Actors Guild), and he's not going to pretend such (certainly not when Wayne is around). Kanye is similarly middle class, but he's such an inaccessible asshole. Drake is relatable, and that second verse has a chilled morosity that I find quite moving (Kanye is NEVER moving, never more than a shallow hipster, who crafts fine beats and hooks). Drake seems like a sort we've been seeing and will see more of, a post-hip hop hip hop artist. Of course, that last verse laid down by Weezy ("best rapper alive," born of the Deep South and Birdman and "hot blocks," traditionally [?] hip hop), after a brilliant pause, like a hidden track for the MP3 generation, is miles ahead of Drake's, full of pleasure and mannerisms and wordart (not -play). Maybe this track is a fluke for our young man, buoyed up by his betters? I hope not....I think not.

addendum: I was being over-tough on Kanye. For rhetoric? For T. Swift? One day soon, his antics might become sympathetic...only the most insecure sort of person postures so. He has a habit of cutting off his nose to spite his face, sort of eroding his substantial catalogue with a whole mess of braggadocio...pretty human, pretty sweet, really.

rep yr city

It was a total success of a non-holiday (my job hates Italian-Americans and does not choose to recognize their tremendous contributions to New York and Society by letting me stay at home and watch Wendy Williams and The View and paint my nails and take a nap and maybe go out to dinner). An inspiring turn at Bobby's Dept. Store (in furnishings and clothings). Nice weather. Nice neighbors (one of whom thinks we have a future in BCAT). A Baltika at Volna with a view of the sea. A cheerful sweep for the Yank-els (and an introduction to that glamorous Twins coach imaged below). In short: many blessings, birdmen, benefactions, bounties, bonuses, Brooklyns.
