After Saturday, the monsoons sort of subsided here, but not before stranding us in summer, or something very like it. Deaths and more deaths in Hollywood and Iran and an upswing in school's-out-for-ever gunplay in the 'hood and a mad, loose-at-the-pins sensation that is breezy or tense, depending on location and day of the week, and a persistent smell of garbage and Bernard Madoff's prison sentence and bad sleep and then funny dreams and also the beach and the future--

Toy Soldiers
Mama and Papa Able eloped in 1968, but were not blessed with we two daughters until the early/middle eighties. If birth date determines inclusion in a particular generation, then neither of us could really be called Gen-X-ers. But since, despite our youth, we had Boomer-hippie parents and shopped at Contempo Casuals and dug all that bummy heroin music, I always felt we deserved a bit of an honorary place among them. All we missed was the 70s tykehood, which--really--is no small thing. Would Janeane Garofalo (or her Reality Bites iteration), all ironic barrettes and lunchbox purses, be possible without this video I've included below? No. So, nevermind.

Good Mojo For The Week
I actually really enjoy Little Boots and everything she's been doing lately, and I felt a strong impulse to mention her at this moment.

In Lighter News/Folk Art For The Weekend

Thanks To Jerry Holt of the Star Tribune in Minneapolis for this gem:
William Gratz (left) and Claire Boucher sat on their houseboat at the Minneapolis impound lot on Thursday afternoon. The young college students built their houseboat/raft with hope of sailing down the Mississippi river to New Orleans.
If It's Gonna Rain, Let It Rain
Elizabeth's Statement:
"My heart ... my mind ... are broken. I loved Michael with all my soul and I can't imagine life without him. We had so much in common and we had such loving fun together. I was packing up my clothes to go to London for his opening when I heard the news. I still can't believe it. I don't want to believe it. It can't be so. He will live in my heart forever but it's not enough. My life feels so empty. I don't think anyone knew how much we loved each other. The purest most giving love I've ever known. Oh God! I'm going to miss him. I can't yet imagine life without him. But I guess with God's help ... I'll learn. I keep looking at the photo he gave me of himself, which says, 'To my true love Elizabeth, I love you forever.' And, I will love HIM forever."
so that, and...
All right, we should be just about cried out now. For the record, the above played at the bar I work at around 6 and everybody just froze. Servers, bartenders, customers. We just kinda froze and listened. It was a weird kind of sobering.

Vision of Love

I've recently become kind of obsessed with reading famous people's Twitter feeds. I'm freaked out by the concept behind the phenomenon, and I don't think I could ever tweet myself, but it seems like the perfect outlet for someone who is completely narcissistic and of the belief that everyone cares what they're thinking or doing from moment to moment (i.e. all celebrities). So I checked out Mariah Carey's twitter for the first time today, and this tweet from last week caught my eye. Perhaps Mimi and I have more in common than a weakness for nervous breakdowns and popsicles?

Some German Jews (say what?) are kinda upset about Britney Jean's maybe, possible, new (Holocaust!) film project...I say: BLESSED TIDINGS!!--this is the biggest windfall my lagging Britney(-ish) book project has seen in months. Le chaim y'all! New lease and whatnot.

Chinese Democracy
Ashley Holmes, daughter of Real Housewives of New Jersey's sweet, innocent, defender of friends and betrayer of sisters, Jacqueline Laurita, enjoys an active Facebook "lifestyle" (like any Bergen County teen/reality demi-star worth her [fingers crossed] high school graduation chin implant). Here, she's enjoying a picture of herself sprayed another color...note the casual, multi-voweled bigotry of buddy Alanna's comment and Ashley's response: ";) lmao." Click to enlarge...kinna hurra.

Funny For Friday

"I had to give up scotch, because it turns me into a werewolf - and cigarettes too. I seem to like to kiss trouble on the forehead and then try to back away. I test my limits quite often. I guess that's what 22-year-olds do. But I'm fallible and human and I'm figuring it out."

Statement for Thursday
She would be a menace and a dangerous influence to St. Lucian society, because the demons that inhabit her tortured body will still have to be fed...I predict that the relative peace and tranquility that we enjoy in this country will desert us and untold misery and disasters will visit us. We cannot put the future of our country in jeopardy for the sake of the sale of a house to a character that will draw to St. Lucia untold human suffering.

Which One Of You #@%&* Took The Last Doughnut?

This has gotten out of hand. Here we have something called Doutzen Kroes (I'm told she's in photographs), out and about and wearing that damn dress! This will be the fourth siting in a week, people! I love the dress, it's got a great personality, but it's got to go now. This is too much.
Bright side to this all, though, at least I've got my Halloween costume picked out early this year, which is awesome, because I wasn't sure how Slutty Spock was going to work.
